Neural networks are replacing humans
With the launch of neural networks such as DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion in 2022, users have the ability to easily create drawings with text annotations. China’s biggest technology companies such as Tencent and NetEase are not against reducing the cost of game development with the help of artificial intelligence. That’s why over the past few months, video game companies, from tech giants to indie game developers, have begun using these programs to design and create video game characters, backgrounds, and promotional materials.
China’s games job market has been shaken after the government freezed licensing for a few months in 2021, leaving thousands of game developers out of work. Over the past year, the number of illustrators’ jobs has decreased by nearly 70% – not just because of regulatory pressure and the economic slowdown, but also because of the explosion in artificial intelligence.
Geoffrey Ding, an associate professor at George Washington University, who studies the development of artificial intelligence in China, says the advancement of AI can increase competition and create new opportunities, but it can also eliminate a wide variety of jobs. He added that this may be the truth. Artificial intelligence will displace many workers, including not only artists but also lawyers and writers.
The Chinese government is making moves to regulate artificial intelligence: In January, China’s Internet watchdog announced a new law that would require manufacturers of “deep fakes” to explicitly label content that could mislead the public, and in April the regulator published a draft law to do the same. Add rule about AI generated images and videos and AI must respect copyright.
