According to Android Studio, the user base of Android 9 is currently larger than the most recent version of the operating system, Android 13. The report they compiled indicates that the version released in 2018 has 12.3% of users, while the recent version of only 12.1%. Even Android 12 has not reached the lead, which is currently in the hands of the Android 11 system with 23.5% of users.

That number is on the rise, as evidenced by a report released in January showing that Android 13 is only present on 5% of mobile devices. You can find the full list below with the usage percentage of each OS developed by Google in recent years:

This rise in Android 13 could also be due to the support times each one offers, such as Samsung, which ensures that every smartphone or smart device has up to four years of operating system updates and five years of security updates. Other vendors are also extending support times so everyone can keep up.

Focus is on the pixel

We also have to take into account that Google has been pursuing a different policy lately, prioritizing its own line of mobile phones, the Pixel. Those with a smartphone are the first to receive Android updates, which gives it more time to spread to others and creates this discrepancy between the most recent versions. Considering it was released in August 2022, it’s already been eight months and it should have surpassed it if it was distributed to others at the same time.

This prioritization is different from what we see, for example, at Apple. On the iPhone, for example, the most recent operating system is most commonly used—apparently its control over exclusivity keeps the number that way. However, Android is present not only in Pixel smartphones, but also in some other manufacturers, which creates a difference observed in the analysis.
