The suppliers involved in these talks have existing manufacturing facilities in Thailand for other customers and are discussing the possible assembly and production of components and modules for MacBooks, sources at the three suppliers involved in the talks told Nikkei.

Additionally, a report released on Thursday added that Apple has been mass-producing its Apple Watch in Thailand for more than a year. Apple and its key suppliers are shifting production out of China, where strict Covid-19 lockdowns crippled Foxconn’s largest iPhone plant last year. In addition, the company is also looking to avoid the impact on its business due to tensions between Beijing and Washington.

Separately, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that Apple tripled its iPhone production in India, having assembled more than $7 billion worth of smartphones in the country in its last fiscal year. The report says the tech giant currently manufactures nearly 7% of its iPhones in India, up from 1% in 2021.

In March, Foxconn announced plans to increase investment outside of China. Meanwhile, Pegatron Corp is in talks to set up a second plant in India as part of its efforts to diversify production outside of China, Reuters reported.

Apple increases iPhone production in India

Apple will triple iPhone production in India and cut production in China. In fiscal 2022, which ended September 24, 2022, the company produced more than $7 billion worth of iPhones in India, according to Bloomberg. This means that almost 7% of all iPhones produced last year were made in India by contract manufacturers. Foxconn and Pegatron. India accounted for just 1% of global iPhone production in 2021.

The information comes from anonymous sources who claim that Apple partners such as Foxconn, Wistron Corp. and Pegatron have quickly added product lines in recent years. Together, the three companies have 60,000 employees in India, making models from iPhone 11 to iPhone 14. By 2025, Apple hopes to make a quarter of all iPhone products in India.

Apple avoids ongoing trade tensions between the US and China. In 2018, the US imposed tariffs on imports from China, affecting US companies whose products were assembled in China and shipped to the US, such as Apple. President Donald Trump then allegedly told Apple CEO Tim Cook that the iPhone would not be subject to the import tax, and the device was never subject to the tax.
