Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishidawas evacuated unharmed after the suspect fired what looked like a smoke bomb in an open-air speech in western Japan this Saturday.

Kishida took cover after hearing a loud explosion. police arrested the man at the sceneas evidenced by Japanese media images.

A police officer suffered minor injuries in the incident, according to Nikkei daily, which bases its information on police in Wakayama prefecture.

The incident happened after assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo AbeJapan’s longest-serving contemporary leader, who was shot dead with an improvised weapon last July while campaigning for parliamentary elections.

Abe’s assassination shocked the nation, where crimes involving firearms are extremely rare, and triggered a security check on the politicians.
