Sega is without a doubt a seminal company in video game history, but the truth is that Rovio, which had one of the first big successes of games aimed at the then nascent smartphone market, deserves similar consideration. Angry Birds along with other great classics like Plants vs. Zombies showed many of us that the potential of smartphone games is much higher than we thought until then.

Long gone are the days when Sega was beating the coppers with Nintendo in the video console market, while its latest creations dominated the best arcades in the world (although, after all, it still maintains its own in Akihabara, Tokyo, which did not close, although they were close to it). However, is still very relevant in today’s gaming industry.

We could say something very similar about Rovio. The release of Angry Birds in 2009 made the then small independent studio one of the biggest stars of today. Soon, new titles like Angry Birds: Space, Angry Birds: Star Wars and others started arriving, as well as all kinds of productions around these angry birds that stole so many hours from us, with our full approval and to our complete satisfaction. 14 years later, the study was unable to repeat the success of its early days.

So both companies have seen better times, and although they cannot yet be compared to Norma Desmond, the truth is that they need to take actions that will improve their position in such a competitive and complex market as the video game market. In this regard, they say there is strength in unity, and they must have thought so of the Japanese veteran, because according to what we can read in The Wall Street Journal, Sega completes purchase of Rovio for $1,000 million.

You read that right, yes, finalization, and both companies seem to have carried out virtually all the previous steps of the process with great discretion, to the point that according to the said article the purchase could be completed as early as next week. This will allow Sega to enter the smartphone gaming market and give Rovio the financial and business support that the company has needed for several years.

Although when we talk about the still inconclusive purchase of Activision-Blizzard King by Microsoft, attention is generally focused on PC and console titles and Call of Duty in particular, we must remember that this operation is important for Redmond for various reasons, one of which is King, which would also be an important boost for Microsoft in the smartphone gaming market. Now, with this smart operation, Sega was able to get ahead of Microsoft in this regard.
