The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Friday granted SpaceX a license that allows it to launch a rocket from the company’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The license will be valid for five years.
SpaceX said it plans to launch its Starship rocket at 7 a.m. local time on Monday, Texas. The company said it will have a launch window of 150 minutes.
The FAA said a time-based procedure is needed to clear the airspace around Boca Chica to identify and reroute aircraft directly affected by the planned launch.
Starship is a large new rocket designed to take humans, including NASA astronauts, into deep space. It should also serve as a relatively inexpensive platform for launching satellites and other payloads into orbit.
The entire Starship system is 120 meters tall, making it more powerful than any previous manned spacecraft. The rocket is designed to be reusable, which SpaceX predicts will keep costs low.
The license granted means that the FAA has determined that Starship launches and reuses will not harm people or property on the ground.
