Japanese game giant Sega announced on Monday that it has made a $776 million offer from Finnish company Rovio Entertainment to Angry Birds developers. Sega offered 9.25 euros per share, which is about 19% higher than the market price. Rovio management supported this proposal.
According to the statement made on Monday, Rovio’s games have been downloaded more than 5 billion times. Meanwhile, the Angry Birds franchise has been licensed for other entertainment and consumer products.
The company wants to use Rovio to expand its presence in the mobile games market and said it will use its capabilities to accelerate the development of mobile versions of existing games. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the acquisition of Rovio could be worth about $1 billion. Rovio shares rose 17.88% immediately after the announcement.
