Google is working behind the scenes on new AI features and even a whole new search engine. The threat from ChatGPT and Bing is getting more and more serious.
Alarm bells have been ringing at Google since December. The launch of ChatGPT and its subsequent (and ever-increasing) integration with Bing marks the search engine’s first serious challenger. According to New York Times sources, Samsung is considering replacing Google search with Bing as the system search engine on its mobile devices. That could cost Google $3 billion annually.
Big Boss Sundar Pichai has stated multiple times that AI is Google’s main focus. Around 160 employees would now take care of the search engine full-time. According to the NY Times, Google is working on a completely new search engine powered by search engines under the project name “Magi”. As we wrote earlier, it will also come with chat capabilities, just like Bing.
It won’t just be a renewed search engine: Google wants to beef up its entire web portfolio with generative AI. A feature called “Searchalong” is planned for Chrome, which provides additional context information for websites. As an example, Google gives you Chrome automatically giving you additional location information when you search for a place to stay on Airbnb.
In addition, of course, there is also Bard, which is already available to a select audience. Bard can already help with the search and should also be able to code in the long term. Google is also reportedly working on chatbots to help find music tracks or converse in foreign languages, though it’s unclear if all of that will fall within Bard’s purview.
Google also remains vague on the timing of all of these announcements. More clarity is to be created during Google I/O 2023. SiliconAngle rightly notes that all of these pseudo-announcements create an image of a panicked company. ChatGPT’s unexpected popularity has prompted the company to react, and it’s a situation it’s not used to.
