Despite supporting the call to stop AI development, Elon Musk has built a new company with exactly that goal.
The fledgling company was registered with a Nevada court under the name X.AI on March 9, according to a document available to the Wall Street Journal. Elon Musk is listed as the company’s president, with Secretary Jared Birchall the only other employee for now. To save additional capital, Musk is listing 100 million shares for sale.
Musk quietly prepared his plan. It was leaked last week that the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter had bought 10,000 GPUs, presumably to build generative AI for Twitter. He can now use this investment for his latest project. Although it remains unclear what exactly he intends to do with X.AI.
Musk is a man of paradoxes, to say the least. Along with thousands of experts from the academic world, he supported the call to temporarily stop the development of artificial intelligence. According to the call, it is irresponsible to develop and sell new technologies that we do not have a sufficient understanding of. Musk recently expressed concern that AI is in the hands of a “ruthless corporate monopoly.”
Those words can be seen as a direct blow to the OpenAI-Microsoft tandem, which is flat out rolling out new AI capabilities across the Microsoft ecosystem. Musk himself was one of the founders of OpenAI in 2015, but left the company in 2018. Now fighting Microsoft’s “AI monopoly” himself, he undoubtedly sees himself as a hero again. His former collaborator, Sam Altman, has only one word to say on the news: “disturbing.”
