Meta is making its AI project Animated Drawings open source. This project was originally developed by the Fundamental AI Research Team and will be released in the wild in 2021. The tool, which you can use online, is capable of bringing simple male drawings to life through image recognition and machine learning. After Meta launched the demo in late 2021, people were already running millions of images through the AI model.

To keep building

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has now announced that Animated Drawings will go open source along with a dataset of approximately 180,000 drawings. This should give developers a starting point to work from. After all, the tool is currently relatively limited and can make human-looking drawings jump or walk. However, as technology advances, it is possible.

By making the project open source, Meta wants to show that it plays an important and relevant role in the development of AI and the open source community. However, the model in question dates back to the breakthrough of generative AI, but is just as well built through deep learning.
