China has unveiled an electromagnetic weapon that fires coin-shaped projectiles that Chinese state media say can be used to quell “violent civil unrest.” The idea is to use them in protests like those that took place at the end of last year, when a large part of the population protested against the tough rules imposed by the government.
The weapons, made by China North Industries Group Corp., are designed to reduce the likelihood of deaths in containment of riots, as well as in the use of firearms firing rubber bullets by the authorities.
During a military technology program broadcast last month by the state broadcaster China Central Television, a CS/LW21 weapon was shown. The development of weapons has already been reported by the South China Morning Post over the past few weeks.
Similar devices have already been developed in other parts of the world. The weapon is based on Coilgun technology, which uses electromagnets to launch a projectile. According to reports, China would test a similar technology to launch a projectile from a warship.
The ability to control the intensity and frequency of shots makes electromagnetic weapons less dangerous to people. However, these devices can cause serious injury. Chinese state media showed on video how the coin-shaped projectiles destroyed thin plywood.
Projectiles are shaped and trajectory for ease of transport and storage. In field trials, the weapon was able to easily pierce 3 mm thick wood planks and break cola and beer bottles as mentioned above.
Equipped with a dual-chamber magazine, the CS/LW21 provides continuous firing and fast reloading. A simple sight is fitted, and the front display panel shows information such as projectile yield, fire mode, rail temperature, frequency, and battery level.
