Andrew Lester, an 85-year-old white male, was charged with assault in the first degree and armed criminal case for the murder of 16-year-old Ralph Jarlat the door of his country house around 10 p.m. Thursday, according to the prosecutor.
“I can say that in this case there was a racial component. This was stated at a press conference by Clay County District Attorney Zachary Thompson, without going into details.
According to the prosecutor, two revolver shots were fired through the glass door. The jarl, who was hit in the head and arm, did not cross the threshold, Thompson said, adding that not a single word was spoken during the clash.
Lester could face life in prison if found guilty on the assault charge, and up to 15 years for a criminal charge, the prosecutor said. He added that hate crimes that were not filed carry a lesser penalty in Missouri.
Kansas City has endured two days of protests after a homeowner shot and killed Jarl, who has been released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries, his family say.
On Monday, protesters gathered outside the suspect’s house on a tree-lined street, chanting “Black lives at risk” and “Stand up, fight back,” videos posted online showed.
“No child should live in fear of being shot for ringing the wrong bell,” Vice President Kamala Harris wrote in response to the shooting. (Reuters)
