On Monday, the Mexican government announced its “deep concern” for the violent events that resulted in the death of more than 180 civilians in the Republic of the Sudan, and joined the UN call for a ceasefire.

“Mexico joins the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the parties to the conflict – in the Sudan – cease hostilities immediately, restore calm and initiate dialogue to resolve the current crisis,” the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) said in a statement.

The government said that Mexico “completely agrees with the United Nations on the need for a ceasefire and a humanitarian pause that allows civilians stranded in conflict zones to access basic services and supplies, medical care, or leave the country safely.”

In addition, SRE stated that through its embassy in Egypt, in competition with Sudan, “He was in constant contact with nine Mexicans. known to be in Sudan.”

He pointed out that, given the escalation of the conflict and the danger on the streets of Khartoum and other cities in Sudan, “Mexicans were advised stay in their homes until the situation allows them to leave the country safely.”

He also indicated that he remains closely following the development of the situation “and is in contact with various international actors to assess the best way for the Mexican people They can leave the country in accordance with security measures.

Over 180 civilians were killed and over 1,800 wounded. during three days of fighting in Sudan, according to Volker Perthes, UN Special Representative for the African country.

Collisions occur after weeks of tension between the army and the FAR about the reform of the security forces during the negotiations for a new transitional government.

Both armed forces were responsible for jointly overthrow to the Transitional Government of Sudan in October 2021.
