Users save their photos on the website via smartphone and link their personal account to the cashless payment service.
While shopping, they scan the barcodes on the products and then show their face to a recognition device. When the scanned image matches the registered photo, the system confirms the payment.
The company plans to continue developing the technology with a view to applying it in stores and supermarket chains.
Company officials hope this will help fill the worker shortage in Japan’s retail industry.
