Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, said the UN had conveyed its concern to the United States about the alleged espionage of the head of the organization and pointed out in a note of protest that it was a violation of the Convention on Privileges and Immunities.

“We have made it clear that such actions are inconsistent with the obligations of the United States listed in the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The revelation of this alleged spying on Guterres’ private conversations must be linked to classified US intelligence documents that have been exposed in recent weeks.

In particular, some of these documents describe Private conversations between Guterres and Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammedabout observations regarding the war in Ukraine, as well as about some African leaders.

In addition, one of the documents regarding the agreement on the export of grain through the Black Sea implies that the US intelligence agencies believed that the position Guterres, by agreement, was very “indulgent” with Russian interests.

attacks on civilians

At a press conference in New York, the spokesman said that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, “the security situation in Ituri province remains extremely worrying due to ongoing attacks against civilians. As a result of the attacks, communities are in dire need of assistance and protection.”

Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for the Secretary General, said: “On 14 April, just a few days ago, more than 55 civilians were killed and others injured in an attack by armed attackers on villages in Djougou territory; the authorities tell us.

He continued: “This was just one of several attacks against communities in Ituri.” According to Dujarric, “since the beginning of April, armed groups have killed at least 150 civilians in the territories of Jugu, Irumu and Mambasa.” The spokesman said: “We and our partners are committed to supporting the people affected by this violence.”

He continued: “Since April 12, WFP has been trying to provide food and cash to almost 239,000 people in these areas, including internally displaced people.”

Dujarric also said: “We also provide shelter, water and sanitation, and medical and educational services. However, the delivery of this aid may be delayed in areas hit by recent attacks.”

He stressed: “Months of violence and insecurity in Ituri have already forced 1.6 million people to flee their homes.” “The authorities must step up measures to protect the civilian population in the affected areas and call on the armed groups to respect human rights and international law,” Dujarric concluded.
