With an update to its Lightroom photo-editing software, Adobe uses artificial intelligence to solve one of digital photography’s most stubborn problems: image noise.
Photos taken in low light are often plagued by noise. To solve this, Adobe trained an AI model to clean up photos. This function is under the name noise reduction available in Adobe Lightroom.
The feature shows how AI can breathe new life into older software and services. We also see this development in other software. For example, companies like Microsoft and Google are working to improve tools like searching with Bing, typing with Word, and composing emails with Gmail.
The results are impressive, but not perfect
The results of the new Lightroom feature are impressive. They help save a portrait shot by enhancing noise on the skin while preserving detail in the hair.
However, the function is not (yet) perfect. It can make the skin look sticky and fake, especially if you crank the noise reduction slider too far. While noise reduction might not deliver perfect results just yet, it does help photographers shoot with a little bit higher ISO with more confidence than they’re used to.

“Our current goal is to make it really easy for anyone to edit photos like a pro so they can truly fulfill their creative vision,” said Rob Christensen, product director for Lightroom at Adobe. āAI makes that possible,ā says Christensen.
More new features in Lightroom
With the latest update, more features have been added besides noise reduction. For example, Lightroom’s AI-powered selection tools can now recognize facial hair and clothing, allowing you to target those parts of an image for editing. Adobe has also added three adaptive presets. These AI-enhanced tools can be used for specific situations such as: B. to whiten teeth or darken beards.
You can also convert videos to black and white for a retro look, and the AI-powered masking tools now work in Lightroom’s web version too. Finally, Lightroom now supports preview to test the Content Authenticity Initiative. This technology was developed to bring more transparency and trust to a world of AI-adapted photos.
