Security strategy based on the onion model

Anyone who wants to successfully digitize a company today needs a reliable network. Not only stability, but also security is an important pillar. Data has become a precious commodity and nowadays every organization is a source of data. This is precisely why adequate security is an indispensable part of any company’s digital strategy. How do you go about securing your business? In conversations with customers and others, I like to compare security to an onion. You know, those multi-layered vegetables. The onion imagery works perfectly around those layers (and sometimes around the tears too, but that’s another story).

Not only the outer layer is important

Anyway, if you compare security to the many layers of an onion, you realize that in recent years a lot of emphasis has been placed on the outer layer, especially the end user. And rightly so: it’s true that in any security infrastructure, the weakest link is the end user. Any effort to strengthen this outer layer through training, awareness campaigns, etc. is more than justified. This outer layer is often worked inwards so that applications and management software also receive the necessary attention. But this focus on the outer layers often comes at the expense of another key layer of security at the core of the onion: the network infrastructure itself.

Dedicated means safer

However, security at this level is also extremely effective. By making the right decisions about your network infrastructure, you can eliminate many cyber threats. Anyone who opts for a fiber optic connection, for example, already has the advantage that they do not have to share the physical connection with others. A leased line is already a first important security. Plus, with a fiber optic connection, you know that all your data is being transported in encrypted form, so even intercepted data is of no value to hackers.

In addition to the connection itself, the connection of your network connection to the Internet POPs (Points of Presence) is also a focus. On the one hand, you don’t want the connection to be compromised by poorly configured switches or routers. On the other hand, you must ensure that the building in which your network is connected is also physically secured. You’re only investing in expensive digital security when you can just walk into the POP building and start tinkering with the equipment that handles security and connections.

This may seem redundant, but there are many organizations that already have high standards for connecting their dedicated ports to the public grid, and physical security is an integral part of this. This attention to preventing unwanted physical visitors is not that exceptional. It also explains, for example, the interest of many customers in grid connections that are laid alongside the high-voltage cables along the train network: these are usually very difficult to reach and therefore offer additional physical security.

Think inside out

In summary: the imagery of the onion is very welcome to you Discuss security strategy. Anyone who secures each layer of the onion usually has nothing to worry about. But if you want to prioritize your security investments, you should realize that it’s not just the end user – the outer skin of the onion – that deserves a lot of attention. You should also not neglect the heart of the onion – the physical network connection. If you make the right decisions here, you can significantly increase your security. And don’t forget: You can only make the right choice if you also keep an eye on the physical security of your line and connections. If not, it will be another onion that will make you cry.
