Amazon will launch its own satellite internet

E-commerce and retail giant Amazon plans to launch 3,236 satellites into low Earth orbit. The company wants to create its own satellite group as an alternative to Starlink and provide network access services from space.

E-commerce and retail giant calls this project Project Kuiper. In April, Amazon signed multibillion-dollar contracts with three different organizations to help launch satellites. These are Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon’s Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance (a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) and European Arianespace. This is the largest rocket deal in the history of the commercial aviation industry.

Starlink currently has approximately 2,000 satellites in low Earth orbit serving approximately 250,000 subscribers. Previously, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX launches for a total of 12,000 satellites. In contrast, Amazon has yet to launch a satellite, but it could still be a major player in this emerging space.

Caleb Henry, a senior analyst at Quilty Analytics, said: “The satellite market is worth tens of billions of dollars, and no one in the industry thinks it fits the ‘winner takes all’ rule. We expect at least two or more domains to appear on the Internet. Home only They will serve not only their consumers, but also any business or organization connected to an Internet connection.”

According to the United Nations member International Telecommunication Union, 37% of the world’s population has never used the internet. In addition, 96% of them live in developing countries. Source
