The Devon and Cornwall Police Department has begun deploying DJI drones to combat dangerous driving on the roads of England and Wales. DJI Matrice 300 drones are used to monitor the movement of cars and motorcycles in areas and roads with a high accident rate.

According to the police department, drones allow officers detection of offenders within a radius of up to 6 km. The DJI Matrice 300 is used by ground patrols that approach the driver if dangerous driving is detected. The drones are equipped with sensors to determine the speed of vehicles, which immediately call the ground patrol if the driver exceeds the speed limit.
According to Sgt. Chris Linzi, cameras collect aerial photographs and speed readings, which makes it difficult to protect offenders. “The camera doesn’t lie,” commented Sergeant Linzi. With drone data, it is more difficult for a driver to declare his innocence and avoid fines. According to the Devon and Cornwall Police Department, the project aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the region’s roads.
The number of crashes is considered high, mostly involving motorcycles, with over 200 deaths or serious injuries per year since 2017. Police say the number accounts for about a third of all crashes, but motorcycles are a minority in the region, accounting for about 1% of all transit vehicles. Therefore, the proportion of serious motorcycle accidents is very high when the small number of vehicles is taken into account.
Inspector Colin Harper, a member of the Devon and Cornwall Police Department drone team, says that The use of drones is innovative and enables the rapid action of agents on the ground.. “We will use this technology on roads where we know motorcycles move very fast, and on dates and locations where motorcycle events are scheduled. Our focus is on the riders we know are most at risk, especially at this time of the year when more riders are back on the road after the winter.”
