Bluesky has started accepting users. Introduced by Jack Dorsey, the decentralized alternative to Twitter launched these days after some time in its closed beta. Of course, they decided that the number of users should not skyrocket and chose a classic mechanism: the invite system.
The decentralized network that Twitter’s founder promised. It was late 2019 when Twitter’s then-CEO promised to fund an independent team to develop “an open, decentralized standard for social networks.” A lot has happened since then, but the promised app is finally here.
The result was Bluesky, a Mastodon-style unified network modeled practically on Twitter and with a design based on the ‘Authenticated Transport (AT) Protocol’.
Easily recognizable interface. Comparison with Twitter begins when the interface and symbols are almost identical. From bluish and gray tones to the look of the profile. It is clear here that Bluesky can be understood as a “side project” sponsored by some of Twitter’s original members.
Bluesky has easily recognizable sections, from the main tab we can see the messages and trends of the people we follow; a search section, a notifications tab and another for our profile and settings.
Now also available on Android. While the iOS application was released at the end of February, the Android version, which can be downloaded from the Play Store, is now available to users.
Bluesky Social as default server. The fact that it is a decentralized network for many users will go completely unnoticed. Bluesky will create a user at @username.bluesky.social by default.
But as Bluesky explains: “…if you decide to host your own server or have a username that is your personal website, you can also change it to change it. If you don’t like the way we show you posts or manage your experience, you can change services without losing friends or data, or via a plugin ecosystem You can change your feed or moderators.”
That is, if users choose to implement their own moderation system or algorithm, they will be able to open their own servers on Bluesky.
There are more than 1.2 million users on the waiting list. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber explained in an interview with TheVerge that after Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, they received 1.2 million requests for access to the service, of which only 20,000 users were able to test the application.
“We are a small team and are currently working hard to keep up with demand and develop audit tools that we believe are essential for wider adoption,” Graber explains.
