The flare seen over Kiev on the evening of April 19 was most likely caused by a meteorite falling from the Lyrid river.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by the State Space Agency of Ukraine.
“The epidemic was most likely caused by a meteorite that fell from the Lyrid river,” the message said.
According to the agency, each year in April, Earth passes through Comet Thatcher, which leaves the Lyrid meteor shower.
Lyrids are very fast and bright meteors that do not leave long burning traces as they pass through Earth’s atmosphere, their signature being bright flashes or so-called “fireballs”.
The Lyrid meteor shower is reported as one of the oldest meteor showers known to man. It was still observed by the Chinese in 687 BC. to. The Lyrid stream is named after the constellation Lyra, where the meteor shower is supposed to fall.
Earth entered Comet Thatcher’s plume on April 15, 2023, and will leave on April 29. The shooting star’s peak falls on April 21.
A similar incident took place in February this year. At night, a meteor fell over northern France and burned up in the atmosphere. During the explosion, a meter-long celestial object recorded by security cameras and eyewitnesses lit up the sky above the country.
As reported by Ukrinform, around 22:00 on April 19, the fall of an unknown aerial object was recorded over Kiev skies. The Main Special Control Center stated that a space object was likely seen in Kiev, penetrating the dense layers of the atmosphere.
