Acer introduces the Swift X 16: a powerhouse for creatives in which the manufacturer combines AMD’s most powerful chips with the most modern GPUs from Nvidia.

AMD and Nvidia need to work together on the Acer Swift X 16. Acer relies on what we think is a particularly interesting combination of AMD Ryzen CPUs and 40th generation GPUs from Nvidia. On the processor side, Acer equips CPUs with the Ryzen 7040 series. These 40 are important because they guarantee that the processors are based on AMD’s latest Zen 4 architecture. This is not a matter of course for the entire 7000 series, which AMD has made quite a mess of.

AMD and NVIDIA

You can configure the Acer Swift X 16 with up to an AMD Ryzen 9 7940H. This is a 45-watt chip with eight cores on board. AMD doesn’t care about the distinction between performance-oriented and efficiency-oriented cores like Intel does, so all eight cores run at maximum clock rates and support multithreading. The base clock is 4 GHz, with a possible boost clock frequency of up to 5.2 GHz. Whether this peak can also be realized depends on Acer’s cooling.

The Ryzen chips have integrated graphics capabilities, but Acer also thinks of users who want a little more horsepower. For them, the Nvidia GeForce 4050 is an option. This mobile GPU is based on the latest Ada Lovelace architecture and brings 6GB of GDDR6. The GPU is by no means the most powerful on the RTX 40 spectrum, but the chip packs more than enough processing power to add significant value to the Acer Swift X 16.

Low memory

Acer also relies on a 16-inch 16:10 screen that can deliver 500 nits despite OLED technology. The resolution is 3,200 x 2,000 pixels and Acer states that it covers the DCI-P3 spectrum 100%. We also read some marketing bullshit in the announcement about scientifically unfounded blue light claims. We enthusiastically welcome the presence of a number pad.

We are a bit surprised by the rest of the equipment, because Acer equips this laptop with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Given the rest of the hardware, a 32GB option would have been appropriate here. You also get 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, USB Type-C is present and the laptop includes a full HDMI 2.1 port.

Acer will bring the device to Europe from June at a starting price of 1,566 euros including VAT. Acer has also launched several laptops in its TravelMate range today, aimed at hybrid workers.
