Membership or funding tags of many media accounts on Twitter have been removed.
This was reported by the BBC, Ukrinform reports.
Changes to the platform have particularly affected the accounts of the British BBC, Russian propaganda source RT, NPR in the US, and others.
A number of media outlets, including US public broadcaster NPR and Canada’s CBC, suspended their activities on Twitter after it was marked as “government funded”. They said the disclosure was false and undermined their credibility as an independent media outlet.
The BBC also filed a complaint last week after it was labeled “government funded” rather than “publicly funded”.
Twitter owner Elon Musk eventually changed the label, saying the social network was “trying to be right”.
However, the tag disappeared from the BBC’s Twitter account on Friday.
Flags showing the funding of media outlets financed by their countries’ governments, such as the Chinese news agency Xinhua and the Russian propaganda source RT, were also removed.
From the beginning, these tags were added to indicate an account’s affiliation with government media or government.
According to the news of Ukrinform, Twitter has lifted restrictions on Kremlin-related accounts after it was acquired by American billionaire Elon Musk.
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the Office of the President of Ukraine, criticized Twitter’s policy of publishing information about the war in Ukraine.
