SpaceX launched the Starship super rocket this week. However, the launch did not go as planned, and a few minutes after launch, the rocket exploded. A video posted to the LabPadre YouTube channel shows the minivan damaged by debris from the explosion. The channel specializes in filming SpaceX launches.

According to SpaceX, the rocket explosion was deliberate. The Starship had several engine problems and was losing altitude, so to avoid more tragedy, the company decided to blow up the rocket. “During the test flight, the ship’s engines failed, it lost altitude and began to fall rapidly. The in-flight kill system was activated on both the launcher and the ship,” SpaceX said, justifying the choice to blow the starship through the air before it could even reach Earth’s orbit. In the video below, you can see the minivan’s recording camera filming the wreckage heading towards you.
In the video, we don’t see the damage done to the minivan itself, but just by seeing the amount of stuff thrown towards the camera, one can imagine that the car was damaged in the process. Louis Bladeras, creator of the LabPadre channel, says the Starship launch was unlike any other. “There were pieces of concrete the size of a bowling ball flying around.” The New York Times also noted that launch failures caused problems not calculated by SpaceX.
Although Musk has said on twitter that the team “learned a lot for the next test launch in the coming months”, the launch caused problems in cities miles away from the launch site. “After launch and unplanned disassembly, particles began to fall on me. It looks like sand, but I don’t know what it is,” Rob Nixon commented in a Facebook post.
In the Port Isabelle area, about 10 km from the launch, the entire city was covered in a thick, grainy dust cloud that littered the entire city. “It was scary,” Sharon Almaguer commented to The New York Times. If, on the one hand, Elon Musk is pleased with the results of the launch, then the inhabitants of Port Isabel were not very pleased with the dust cloud thrown towards the city.
