The US will start using artificial intelligence (AI) to combat trafficking in fentanyl towards the country, the Minister of Homeland Security said this Friday, Alejandro Majorcas.

The official today announced the creation of a task force within his department to study how the technology could be used to improve security in the country, including to stop fentanyl trafficking.

“We will explore different uses for this technology to better detect fentanyl shipments, detect and intercept the flow of precursor chemicals and find the core of criminal organizations in order to eliminate them, ”he specified at a conference in the organization Council on Foreign Relationsbased in Washington.

His department is also interested in studying How can AI be used to counter cyber attacks foreign agents, among which he named China and Russia.

“We must consider the many ways that artificial intelligence will radically change the threat landscape and expand the tools we have in order to succeed in combating these threats,” Majorcas said.

Use in the United States of fentanyl, a substance of which more than 100,000 overdose deaths last year in the country prompted the Joe Biden government to take action to stop the entry of the substance.

Among them is an attempt to strengthen cooperation with Mexico, which the United States lists as one of the main countries through which drugs enter their territory.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded that the opioid overdose crisis was a public health issue that the United States must address, and even denied that fentanyl was produced in his country, arguing that the substance was entering North America from Asia.

In his 2024 budget bill, Biden asked Congress for $46.1 billion for his drug strategy.
