Kidnapping scams are becoming more common and sophisticated. Recently, a mother from Arizona (USA) experienced a real nightmare after almost believing her daughter was kidnapped. Jennifer DeStefano revealed that her traumatic experience began when she received a call from a number she didn’t know. She was not going to answer, but she knew that her 15-year-old daughter Briana went skiing, and she feared that an emergency could occur.

When she answered the phone, the mother distinctly heard the voice of her daughter, who was crying and sobbing. Shortly thereafter, Jennifer asked what happened. It was then that he heard:Mom, these bad people are with me, help me.According to Jennifer, the alleged kidnappers asked her to pay a ransom in order to safely release the teenager. However, the scammers wanted to take the mother, not receive it electronically.

Fortunately, the American was able to confirm that her daughter was safe within minutes, but later discovered that the scheme was using artificial intelligence to reproduce her daughter’s voice, a scam that often took place in her area. “I started to wonder, for example, if these people were asking to find my mother and take her away, obviously they might be gathering some information to try and track me down or some of my siblings to actually make it happen.Briana said.So it definitely scared me.“

Experts warn of the dangers of AI

Experts warn that voice reproduction can happen in seconds with the right software, and it’s becoming increasingly easy for criminals and intruders to gain access and use it. A worrisome scenario as artificial intelligence technology is currently largely out of control.

“There are many positive and interesting aspects to these technologies.” said Sinead Bovell, founder of Waye, a technology education company. “But of course, they also carry a lot of risk and damage.“

To avoid this AI voice modeling scam, experts recommend keeping social media profiles private and watching for warning signs, such as phone calls with unknown or international area codes and phone numbers.

The use of artificial intelligence by scammers is a wake up call for people to be aware and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim of a scam. Experts emphasize that it is important to keep personal information secure and not to disclose data to outsiders.
