Before Elon Musk bought the platform, the blue checkmark was a verification badge that Twitter provided for free.
It has been reported that removing old blue ticks has to be done manually, so this too is likely to be a manual process that will continue in the coming days.
It was originally used as an authentication tool to stop fake accounts and the spread of misinformation.
Now this is a token that the account is subscribed to a premium service called Twitter Blue, and a verification process is performed when making a payment. Prices vary depending on where you subscribe, but average around $8 per month.
