Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, who arrived in his country on Sunday, has been extradited from the United States on charges of corruption.and, by court order, will be imprisoned in a police prison, where two more former heads of state are being held.

Toledo, who ruled from 2001 to 2006 arrived on a commercial flight to Jorge Chavez de Lima Airport in the Peruvian capital, accompanied by security agents. The 77-year-old former president turned himself in to US authorities on Friday. after more than six years in the extradition process.

Judge Margarita Salcedo, who is in charge of hearing the case, confirmed that Toledo will serve 18 months of preventive detention ordered against him and that he will be transferred to prison on Sunday.

Prosecutors have charged him with money laundering and conspiracy, which the former president denies.

A native of the Andes and a childhood shoe shiner, Toledo was detained in the United States in 2019 following a formal request from Peru for his extradition. A year earlier, he left the country and was declared a fugitive by the justice system. He was released on bail in 2020 and has been living in California ever since.

The head of the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), Javier Llaque, said that if Toledo is placed in the Lima police base, where former presidents Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo are located, he will have the same prison status as them.

PBefore a judge ordered Toledo sent to prison, his lawyer, Roberto Su, told reporters that he was opposed to the measure due to the former president’s precarious health.

The Odebrecht corruption scandals have affected several governments in Latin America and have affected nearly every former Peruvian president in the last two decades.
