As 5G wireless technology is already being implemented worldwide, the focus has shifted to 6G, the next generation of wireless networks. While 5G is already a significant improvement over previous wireless technologies, 6G is expected to bring even more advances in speed, latency, spectrum, artificial intelligence, security and energy efficiency. Therefore, understanding the possible differences between 5G and 6G is critical to understanding the potential of future wireless communications. While 5G is still in the process of spreading around the world, research and development of 6G is already underway. According to recent reports, China is testing ultra-fast wireless internet with download speeds of up to 300 Gbps.

US concerned about China’s success in high-speed connectivity

The 6G race is heating up and the US fears being left behind. Last Friday, the White House met with industry leaders to discuss the next generation of wireless communications. The fear is that other countries will take the lead in setting standards for 6G connectivity and news from China only raises US concerns. The 25th Institute of the Second Academy of Aerospace Sciences and Industry of China reported that successful wireless transmission at the terahertz (THz) frequency level has reached a data rate of 100 Gbps for the first time. However, a 1 Gbps 5G signal is considered great in the US.

The technology uses THz frequencies, such as mm wave spacing for 5G, which presents issues with signal distance and cloud/fog penetration. However, THz communication can provide nearly the same quality of wireless transmission as fiber optic transmission. With the unexpected 6G wireless launch by 2030, this new technology is a major development that could lead to incredible new services in the entertainment, automotive and healthcare industries. The US and China will likely continue to compete in the development and improvement of technology through their innovations.
