Rumors of a new Macbook Air 15 inches is getting more and more intense. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has shelved the idea of including an M3 processor in the device and will now offer variants with M2 processors but without the M2 Pro.
Tech giant seeks to expand its production outside of China
There have been many rumors in the past that the 15-inch MacBook Air will be based on the M3. However, new information coming out of the supply chain suggests that Apple has shelved the idea. Now Kuo confirms this information and adds more information about the M2 processors and the release date of the device.
Previously, Kuo predicted there would be two processor options, but believed that one of them would be the M2 Pro. However, in his latest tweet, he reveals that the two will be variants of the M2 with a difference in the number of cores, “similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2.”
Apple is expected to sell five to six million units of the new 15-inch MacBook Air. In addition, Kuo revealed that mass production of the M3 processor is expected to begin in the second half of 2023.”slightly ahead of M3 Pro and M3 Max“.
Finally, the analyst hasn’t given an exact launch date for the 15-inch MacBook Air other than confirming it will happen in 2023. However, many conflicting rumors point to a possible launch in June.
According to a report by Nikkei Japan, Apple is in talks with suppliers to manufacture MacBooks in Thailand as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its manufacturing footprint outside of China.
The suppliers involved in these talks have existing manufacturing facilities in Thailand for other customers and are discussing the possible assembly and production of components and modules for MacBooks, sources at the three suppliers involved in the talks told Nikkei.
Additionally, a report released on Thursday added that Apple has been mass-producing its Apple Watch in Thailand for more than a year. Apple and its key suppliers are shifting production out of China, where strict Covid-19 lockdowns crippled Foxconn’s largest iPhone plant last year. In addition, the company is also looking to avoid the impact on its business due to tensions between Beijing and Washington.
