Although SpaceX holders tend to choose Crew Dragon and Starship, Starlink is still today, one of the company’s main sources of recurring revenue. It’s true that putting the vast network of satellites that provide the service into orbit is very expensive, which leads us to assume that the numbers still don’t add up, but in this case it makes sense to understand that this is a service with a lot of potential growth, so its profitability seems more than likely, if not in the short term, then at least in the medium term.

It’s been just over two years since the service was available in Spain and since then coverage on the territory of the state (including the islands) is practically completealthough in this respect a strange “place” is shown to be affecting part of Guadalajara and the community of Madrid, a dark area which, according to the site’s inquiry about the cities contained therein, is caused by the fact that “Starlink has no additional capacity in your area and hopes to expand service in your area in 2023«.

Since its first launch, Starlink has grown not only in coverage but also in speed. Already in 2021, we’ve seen it step closer to broadband, and while it hasn’t yet been benchmarked, it offers speed (130Mbps on average, according to the company) along with relatively low latency, making the vast majority of common uses possible to use the Internet normally, including the consumption of audiovisual content and online gaming.

Something that deters some users from jumping to this service is its cost. Recall that upon arrival in Spain you had to make an initial payment of 499 euros to purchase the device, to which you had to add another 60 for shipping costs and of course the monthly fee, which at the time was 99 euros. Recently, however, Starlink has added an interesting option, which is the rental of access equipment (that is, the antenna and related equipment). In this way, those who are not interested in owning the access kit (the price of which has also dropped to 300 euros plus 23 for shipping costs), they can choose to pay rent for it, which is 15 euros.

The next and latest step, as we can see on his website, is this now the monthly fee for Starlink has dropped to 65 euros, to which, yes, we will have to add 9 euros per month for the concept of a regulatory tariff that SpaceX approves of the National Commission for Markets and Economic Competition. In this way, the final fee is 74 euros for those who bought the equipment and 89 euros for those who preferred to rent it.

The Starlink service is still expensive compared to the access plans offered by operators, both direct and indirect. However, there are many cases where this service may be the best choice (in some cases it may even be the only one), so the price drop is something to be thankful for. The key is whether we will see more movement in this direction, especially as its main competitor, Amazon, begins to expand its own satellite network.
