The US space forces said on Monday that Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has received permission to lease a second rocket launch complex at a military base in California. Under the lease, SpaceX will launch Falcon 9 rockets from the Space Launch Complex at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a military launch site north of Los Angeles, where SpaceX owns another launch site. It also has two facilities in Florida and a private spaceport in south Texas.
The letter supporting the decision was signed Friday by Space Launch Delta 30 commander Colonel Rob Long, the US Space Force said in a statement. The statement did not mention the length of SpaceX’s lease.
The new launch pad, which was vacated last year by the Boeing-Lockheed United Launch Alliance joint venture, gives SpaceX more room to meet its increasingly busy schedule of commercial, government and private satellite launches.
Vandenberg Space Force Base allows launches in southern orbit over the Pacific Ocean, often used for weather monitoring, military or spy satellites.
