Japanese startup ispace inc is preparing to land the Hakuto-R Mission 1 (M1) spacecraft on the moon.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.

Japan’s ispace was scheduled to land on the moon at 1:40am on Wednesday (4:40pm GMT on Tuesday), after taking off in December on a SpaceX rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

At about 6,000 km/h (3,700 mph), the 2.3-metre (7.55-foot) M1 will begin its one-hour descent phase from its current position in lunar orbit approximately 100 km (62 miles) above the surface. Chief Technical Officer Ryo Ujie spoke at a media briefing on Monday.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) suffered one of its biggest blows last month, losing its new medium-range H3 rocket, which was forcibly destroyed by hand after reaching space. This comes less than five months after JAXA’s Epsilon solid propellant rocket malfunctioned after launch in October.

So, if successful, the mission will mark a long-awaited departure from Japan’s recent failures in space technology, which has great ambitions to build a domestic industry, including the goal of sending Japanese astronauts to the moon by the late 2020s.

As Ukrinform reported, the American company SpaceX conducted a test launch of the Starship rocket system on Thursday, April 20, but the rocket exploded in the air due to an emergency.
