Slack announced Canvas last year at Dreamforce, Salesforce’s annual event, which also owns the chat platform. View Canvas as a Google Docs app but in the chat client. Beta testers have been able to get started with the feature for a few weeks now. Starting today, Slack Canvas is rolling out to all users worldwide.
With Canvas, Slack wants to create order in the chaos between numerous threads in which information is fragmented. Think of Canvas as a collection of media, themes, or files that you can combine into an overview. Don’t expect numerous formatting options like Google Docs, Canvas certainly isn’t a replacement, but it does provide a clutter-free place for even multiple users to collaborate.
Links in Canvas display as beautiful cards, YouTube videos play right inside the document, and any media you upload appears beautifully. For example, you can create a document with workflows, onboard new collaborators, report bugs, and more. The only condition: As a company, you must use Slack intensively in order to derive added value from Canvas.
Incidentally, sharing and assigning permissions is easier than, for example, in Google Docs. You can only share a canvas within the organization, not outside. Does a colleague not yet have access? Then you can easily add it. If you mention a colleague in such a document, a blue or gray dot will automatically appear next to it. When it turns gray, he or she doesn’t have access to that canvas yet.
With Canvas, Slack wants to ensure that pins and bookmarks are no longer the only way to highlight important things. Anyone can get started with Canvas starting today or in the coming days when your organization rolls out the update.
