The results of a survey published by Counterpoint Research this week showed that iPhone is the most used cell phone among used devices, representing 49% of the market for used mobile devices. Closest to the figures approached Samsung with 26%.
Global refurbished smartphone market up 5% in 2022, despite a 17% drop in China. India leads the way with a growth of 19%, which shows the great interest of Indian consumers in smartphones.
The figures received by India were considered among the most remarkable in the list of countries using used devices. This is because India is a developing country and consumers end up not being able to imagine the same financial possibilities as users from other countries when purchasing a cell phone.
While sales of used Apple phones are up 16% globally in 2022, Samsung is seeing a decline in sales of its used phones, possibly due to a small percentage of Android users switching to iOS in the aftermarket.
According to Counterpoint, demand for refurbished smartphones is growing worldwide, especially among new smartphone buyers in established markets and mobile phone users in emerging markets.
Apple has an iPhone trade-in program that gives you credit for a new device when you return your old one. Returned iPhones are evaluated and, if in good condition, may be resold as certified refurbished iPhones. In addition, other carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T also offer certified refurbished phones.
In recent years, sales of refurbished smartphones have grown at a faster rate than sales of new models. In 2019, sales of new phones were down 2%, while sales of refurbished smartphones were down less than 1%. In 2020, sales of new phones fell by 12%, while sales of refurbished models grew by 5%. Both categories recorded 5% sales growth in 2021.
