The progress of DLSS, whether in its second or third major iteration, is unstoppable. When NVIDIA introduced DLSS 3 alongside the GeForce RTX 40 generation last September, there were unfounded fears that the company would drop DLSS 2, which is compatible with all three generations of GeForce RTX (20, 30 and 40), in order to focus all its efforts solely on DLSS. 3, which, as you already know, only supports the latest generations. However, and as a matter of fact, the company has made it very clear that on the contrary, DLSS 2 is still a very important and fully up-to-date technology.
We saw the most recent example of this last week, when DLSS support reached 290 games (you can see the full list at this link if you wish), in a progression that adds all kinds of games, so options for GeForce RTX graphics card users, whether be it desktops or laptops, their capabilities are growing to reach their full gaming potential. Moreover, we have long been used to seeing how this support comes in time for the launch of some of the most anticipated titlesto enjoy them from the first moment in the best conditions.
When Returnal hit the market last February, it did so with support for DLSS 2 and ray tracing. Let’s remember that this is a title with quite high technical requirements, so having this technology from day one undoubtedly made a big difference and allowed it to be played in much better conditions on more modest systems. And the good news is that as of today, Returnal also has DLSS 3 support. As you can see in the table below, with all RTX 40 models and maximum graphics settings, the performance increase is greater than 2x:
So as you can see, having an RTX 4070 and activating DLSS 3 will allow us to play Eternal with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, with active ray tracing and maximum graphics settings, with an average practically 100 frames per second, up from 40.4 which we would get with DLSS 3 turned off. And if we look at the data for the RTX 4090, the jump is even more spectacular because we went from 83.9 to 188.6that means we add more than a hundred frames per second.
But Returnal isn’t the only game to get DLSS support this week. Among the latest titles that feature DLSS 2, they stand out Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Video Game 6, GUN JAM and STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGINin addition to announcing that The Lord of the Rings: Gollumwhich will be playable from next May 25, will have DLSS 2 and DLSS 3 support and will be able to enjoy ray tracing from day one.
