Russia fined Wikipedia for “false information”

A Russian court imposed a new fine on Tuesday 800 thousand rubles (about 176 thousand Mexican pesos) against Encyclopedic portal Wikipedia allegedly for spreading “false information” and refusing to remove it.

So, he told the Wikimedia Foundation, the owner of the Russian edition of Wikipedia, guilty under Article 13 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation and decided to impose a fine on the organization, according to the news agency TASS.

The materials attached to the case show, according to the prosecution, that Wikipedia distributed “false information about the activities of the Jamaat Tabligh group”Indian Islamic religious movement, recognized in Russia as an extremist group.

In April 2022, a court fined Wikipedia for refusal to delete articles about events registered in the city of Bucha during the war, the destruction of a hospital and a theater in Mariupol, and other issues related to the actions of the RF Armed Forces as part of the invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian authorities insist on the removal of restricted materials from the portal, including false information about the advance of Ukrainian forces. Thus, the Wikipedia Foundation will appear in search engines with a notice showing that “violated Russian law.”
