The International Meteor Organization, which brings together meteorite researchers from different countries, published a report on the fall of bolide in Ukraine on April 19.

This has been reported by Ukrinform with reference to the report.

“According to the world media, on the evening of April 19, 2023, the inhabitants of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, which was periodically attacked by Russian missiles, were frightened by a bright glow in the sky … Although it did not immediately become clear. , this time the flash was a completely natural phenomenon, namely – a very bright car,” says the organization’s publication.

It is noted that part of the car was recorded from a long distance by the cameras of the European car network (a project of the Institute of Astronomy of the Czech Academy of Sciences, operating in Slovakia in cooperation with the Institute of Astronomy of the Slovak Academy). Sciences) At 21:57 Kiev time and the whole show took no more than 5 seconds. The car was also recorded by the camera of the special AllSky7 project located in the Bárdos Lajos primary school in the city of Feherdjarmat in Hungary. A video obtained directly in Kiev was also used for the study.

The report emphasizes that the bolid was observed for the first time 98 kilometers above Velika Dymerka in the Kiev region. It then passed directly over Kiev at an altitude of about 80 kilometers and continued to advance southwest at 29 kilometers per second.

The great flash occurred at an altitude of 38 kilometers, when the absolute magnitude of the bolid reached -18m or slightly more, that is, the bolid belonged to the category of superbolids (bolites brighter than -17m).

An asteroid with an initial mass of 200-300 kilograms (about half a meter in diameter) shattered at an altitude of 38 kilometers and turned into many pieces and dust. The slowdown of the car after the explosion indicates that the largest pieces formed had a mass of less than 1 kilogram. According to the report, another bright flare occurred at an altitude of 32.5 kilometers, and other minor flares occurred at an altitude of 31, 30 and 29.5 kilometers.

The car was last seen in the video at an altitude of 28 kilometers at a speed of about 10 km/h.

Experts point out that the high initial velocity is not conducive to the preservation of the meteorite. Apparently, only small parts of it made it to the ground. Depending on their size and actual high-altitude winds, they can be found somewhere between the cities of Popilnya, Romanivka, Strokiv and Pavoloch in the Zhytomyr Territory.

Researchers assume that two years ago this object was already approaching Earth.

A bolide is a large, fiery, bright meteor, an extremely rare phenomenon that looks like a fireball moving across the sky. This phenomenon is caused by the penetration of large solid particles, called meteorites, into the dense layers of the atmosphere. The particle, which enters the atmosphere at supersonic speed, heats up due to braking and a glowing incandescent gas shell forms around it. Bolids usually have a pronounced angular diameter and can be seen even during the day. The flight of a car is often accompanied by sounds resembling thunder. Due to the strong heating, the meteorite body often breaks apart and falls to Earth in pieces with a rumble. Remains of meteorites that fall to Earth are called meteorites.

In a bolide, the nucleus, head, tail and trail (straight or curved) remaining after its flight are distinguished.

As reported by Ukrinform, at around 22:00 on April 19, the fall of an unknown aerial object was recorded in the skies of Kiev. The Main Special Control Center stated that a space object was likely seen in Kiev, penetrating the dense layers of the atmosphere.

The State Space Agency said the glow seen over Kiev on the evening of April 19 was most likely caused by a meteorite falling from the Lyrid Stream.
