In a new privacy issue, Microsoft tracks all of your visits and forwards them to a Bing API.
Edge’s latest update contains a privacy bug that redirects all your web traffic to Microsoft. The issue came to light on Reddit. For each full URL you visit, Microsoft sends a notification to bingapis.com.
An investigation by The Verge reveals a potential bug in a new feature introduced in Edge earlier this year. You can now follow “Makers” on social media platforms to get notified when they post something new. Normally, Bing should receive an alert when you are on certain pages related to such a “creator”.
Apparently a recent update changed this parameter and knowingly or unknowingly every URL you visit gets redirected to Bing. Microsoft has already responded that it will take appropriate measures to fix the problem. The same statement does not specify what the use of “bingapis.com” is and how big the privacy issue is.
If you prefer not to wait for an update, don’t follow creators and simply want to switch off the function, you can already do so without any problems. Click on the three dots in the top right and select institutions at the lower edge. Choose left Privacy, Search and Services and scroll all the way down until you reach Services Are. Here you can Disable Show suggestions to follow creators in Microsoft Edge. We’ve already disabled all other options in this menu to avoid throwing away our data. After all, Microsoft can already track you sufficiently within Windows 11, whether you want it or not.
