AT&T has just helped make a major breakthrough in telecommunications technology and has reached a remarkable milestone. The company’s technology was used to make the first space voice call from an ordinary smartphone.
Although phone calls as a technology is more than a century old, there are still many breakthroughs in this segment. Now, a well-known telecommunications company has helped make the first phone call from space with the Samsung Galaxy S22. This milestone was reached by AST SpaceMobile, the company that worked to build the first space-based cellular broadband network and succeeded in making the first two-way voice call directly to a regular smartphone using its satellite technology.
But the company didn’t do it alone, as it did this space exploration using an unmodified Samsung Galaxy S22 over AT&T’s spectrum. More specifically, AST SpaceMobile used proprietary technology and the BlueWalker 3 satellite to complete direct voice communication from space to a device connected to a conventional cellular network. Thanks to AT&T spectrum, the company’s engineers were able to make this unique voice call from Midland, Texas to Rakuten in Japan.
Chris Sambar, President of AT&T Network, said, “AT&T’s legacy began with the birth of the phone 147 years ago and has continued with many other firsts, including intercontinental calling, international calling, calling from the moon, and partnering to form a unified partner. network. It was created for American first responders. We’re empowering people and this important milestone with AST SpaceMobile is a big step forward and we can’t wait to see what’s next in our space journey.”
