It’s been almost a year since we knew there was going to be a sixth season of Black Mirror. As we told you back then, the departure of Charlie Brooker (show creator) from his production company House of Tomorrow, it made it harder for creators and Netflix to get to work with the new season. However, after a chain of purchases, sales, mergers and more, the necessary circumstances again arose for Brooker to restore the successful and valued series.
But we haven’t heard from him since then about how the production of Black Mirror season six is going. Not about his arguments, of course, because that is something that Brooker is very protective of so that the leak does not end the surprising effect that each of the episodes of his series represents, nor about its rhythm, scheduled dates, etc. The mutism was exceptional, so the official announcement by Netflix we were surprised and for many (myself included) it was a joy… with some caveats.
And what kind of advertisement is this? Well, as we can read in Tudum and we can also confirm it by accessing the series file on the platform itself, Netflix will premiere the sixth season of Black Mirror in June. A specific day hasn’t been announced yet, but after roughly four years since the premiere of the fifth, a few days more or less won’t make much of a difference in what the overall wait has meant. And yes, along with the announcement of the new season, Netflix released a video that serves as its first preview:
In Brooker’s statements about this sixth season of Black Mirror, he mentions some changes to the classic postulates of the series «I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should present stories that are completely different from each other and still surprise people, including me, or else what’s the point? It should be a series that cannot be easily defined and can constantly reinvent itself.
Partly as a challenge and partly to keep things fresh for both myself and the viewer, I started this season by intentionally changing some of my own basic assumptions about what to expect. As a result, this time around, along with some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes, we also get some new elements, including some that I previously blindly swore the show would never do, to expand the parameters of what an episode of Black Mirror is. It even is. All the stories are still Black Mirror through and through, but with some crazy twists and more variety than ever before.«.
And what exactly does that mean? The truth is that aIn previous seasons we have seen changes in the model. For example, and unlike what had happened in all the episodes up to that point, the USS Callister and the sensational San Junípero left us with a good taste in our mouths and a certain sense of optimism for the first time in history. We’ve also seen the series dedicate an episode to remember, within its own plot, yes, some previous episodes.
On the other hand, it is true that the last two seasons have started to show some wear and tear not in the concept of the series, but in the plots of its episodes. Redefining his seams, added to the forced layoff for three years, could be the breath of fresh air he needed. However, it seems very difficult to return to the level that was shown mainly in the first two seasons. But hey, it’s Charlie Brooker and it’s Black Mirror, so we’ll have to give it a shot, right?
