There is justifiably a huge amount of resentment about OpenAI’s handling of ChatGPT data. Although most chatbot users are aware of the risks associated with this type of service and therefore do not send it information that must remain private (be it personal, confidential, etc.), these months we know of few contrary cases, such as some Samsung employees who entered sensitive company information into various queries. And if it happened with companies, we can imagine that the same case happened among private users.
The data breach that occurred at the end of March turned on a lot of red lights. Italy quickly responded to the incident, adding further concerns about the service and subsequently blocking access to it from the country. But that was just the beginning because, as we told you a few days later, many other European countries began to conduct research in the same direction. As you already know, countries that are part of the European Union are governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (RGPD or better known by its abbreviation in English GDPR), which it has a more protective profile regarding user data, for our pleasure.
Although the data leak was a problem, we must not forget that it was a one-time event and that OpenAI was giving an explanation for everything that happened. What is constant, however, is that the company can use our conversations with ChatGPT to train the model. It’s not a surprise or a secret, the company has always reported this. However, as awareness of the potential risks grows, it is understandable that users want more control over data and avoid using them for the learning process of the algorithm if possible.
The good news is that OpenAI has responded to this user demand and subsequently It is now possible to configure ChatGPT to not save our conversation history and use it to train the model. Yes, it’s true that losing the history feature is a shame, but for those who prioritize the privacy of their data and conversations over the convenience of history, this is undoubtedly great news.
By default, ChatGPT is configured to save history and enable training with the same. To change this, we will need to open the website of the service (the one we use to chat with the chatbot) and click on the bottom left, where our username is shown with three dots on the right. In the menu that appears, click on “Settings”, then on “View” that will appear to the right of “Data controls” and in the section that will then appear, we will disable “Chat and training history” .
Once this change is made, ChatGPT will no longer use our conversations for your training.
