Journalist Carmen Aristegui received the 19th Diario Madrid Prize for Journalism on Wednesday.
Aristegui was recognized for her “extensive and undisputed career in the press, on radio and television, in professional activities and in her ongoing defense of civil liberties in Mexico,” according to the award certificate presented by the Diario Madrid Foundation.
During a ceremony held in the capital of Spain, the founder of Aristegui Noticias said that the recognition is an encouragement to continue the work of communicators who had to close or reduce their activities in dictatorships or in countries that were considered democratic, but which have registered failures.
In his speech, he acknowledged fallen comrades, persecuted, imprisoned, or those who sought exile due to persecution or harsh conditions in order to continue to practice journalism.
“The right to information, democracy itself, these are conquests that are not eternal and that you must fight every day, every hour in order to protect them.”
The prize consists of a bas-relief by Julio López Hernández, which commemorates the closing of Diario Madrid just during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, in another episode of Spain’s transition to democracy.
In a previous interview with A countryjournalist Carmen Aristegui thought she could not imagine “non-critical journalism” since the exercise involved the task of monitoring power.
He also warned that there are problems with free speech in Mexico and other parts of the globe:
Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida said “there is no person more suitable or more deserving to receive this recognition” as “he has turned the practice of journalism into a bulwark” against what she called “the storm of authoritarianism” that emanates “from all kinds of ideologies and thoughts.”
And she did so, in the words of the mayor, defending the values of journalism “for the betterment of society and democracy” despite all sorts of threats and risks posed by all the governments “against which she remained firm.”
The mayor thanked Aristegui both for his human stature and for his professional work, because “without a strong journalism that does not pay attention to government interference and simply strives for independence and truth,” like the one defended by a Mexican journalist, “we cannot do. it is possible to have democracy and a consolidated rule of law state.”
