Scientists used radio telescopes at 16 locations around the world to observe the galaxy Messier 87, located 55 million light-years from Earth. The telescopes’ remote location allowed the researchers to obtain images showing the black hole’s accretion disk attached to plasma jets.
The image shows jet emissions from the north and south sides of this accretion disk.
Accumulation disks and jets are thought to exist alongside black holes at the center of galaxies. However, when another group of scientists took the first picture of a black hole’s dark edge four years ago, it showed no accretion disk or jet.
This time, it was noted that scientists managed to record them using radio waves of different frequencies, and simultaneously observed a larger area of the black hole using more telescopes.
As reported by Ukrinform, the State Space Administration of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly released spherical color images of Mars obtained with the help of the Tianwen-1 orbiter.
