As noted, the U.S. government grounded Starship after allegations that the launch of a rocket containing explosives caused potentially dangerous debris to fall into the homes and habitats of endangered animals.

“The FAA will oversee the investigation into the Starship/Super Heavy test mission accident,” the FAA said, adding that this is standard practice for all such accident investigations.

Dust and debris from the tests reportedly fell on residents of Port Isabel, Texas, about 10 kilometers from the launch site, and on Boca Chica Beach, a nesting site for endangered species, including birds and sea turtles.

Sierra Club Environmental Protection Director Dave Cortez said Port Isabel residents have reported smashed workplaces and ash-like particles covering their homes and schools. Concrete on the launch pad, which was damaged by the rocket’s launch, fell into the ocean, Cortez said.

Starship/Super Heavy launch authorization will be reinstated after the FAA determines that any systems, processes or procedures involved in the accident did not affect public safety.
