Mexico criticizes Peru over Pacific alliance claims

The Mexican government criticized this Thursday a meeting between Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and former Mexican President Felipe Calderon (2006-2012), in which she accused Mexico of “paralyzing” the Pacific Alliance for not handing over an interim presidency.

“The position is really unfortunate, the political statement is in line with conservatism and, of course, contrary to the national interest,” said Interior Minister Adán Augusto López, who will succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is infected with the coronavirus. 19.

His words came after Boluarte organized a ceremony marking the 12th anniversary of the Pacific Alliance in Lima, which was attended by Calderón, López Obrador’s biggest political rival.

Boluarte accused López Obrador, whom he branded “fake”, of “unwillingness” to hand over the presidency of the Pacific Alliance to him and that by doing so he caused “paralysis of most of the actions” of the business bloc, which also includes Chile and Colombia.

But Mexico’s interior minister, second only to the president, defended the government’s position, which included providing asylum to the family of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who was ousted last December after a failed coup d’état.

“In the case of Peru, the federal government, following the instructions of the President of the Republic, acted with a lofty vision. For example, the wife and children of President Castillo have been granted asylum, the children are being provided with comprehensive support,” he said.

The Pacific Alliance, formally established 10 years ago, boasts of being “the eighth economic power and the eighth export power in the world”, accounting for 41% of Latin America’s gross domestic product (GDP) and attracting 38% of foreign direct investment.

Although the alliance has avoided ideological conflicts similar to those with other Latin American organizations, the crisis in Peru has created friction, especially with Mexico, where López Obrador refuses to hand over the presidency to Boluarte.

In this context, Calderón stated in Lima that they were “all friends” during his tenure.

“Hispanics who loved each other, who recognized our brotherhood without bargaining, without prejudice and without complexes,” he commented.

In this regard, the Minister of the Interior of Mexico said that “if anything characterized Felipe Calderon, it was his commitment to foreign interests.”
