Sony has just presented its fiscal results, and while not all of them are happy for the Japanese giant, business around the PlayStation 5 is going well. More than good, you could say, and that the next-gen console tripled its sales in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year.

That is, from the beginning of January to the end of March 2023 Sony sold 6.3 million PS5s, more than triple compared to the same period last year, in which it placed barely 2 million units. Of course, it has done so at other times and has already overcome the component shortages that have plagued the tech sector as a whole.

In this regard, it should be noted that the best sales period for Sony’s console was the previous quarter, in which 7.1 million PlayStation 5 units were distributed, although the last quarter of each year is usually the one with the most sales. as a general rule, since there are holiday seasons and the most aggressive deals of the year (Black Friday, Christmas, etc.),

Anyway, Sony can be happy because sales are stable and because they met their goals: Of the 19 million units they expected to sell during the fiscal year, they ended up selling 19.1 million. In the same period the previous year, console sales were 11.5 million.

Total, PlayStation 5 has already sold 38.4 million units, which ranks among the most popular next-generation consoles on the market. According to not-so-updated figures, the PS5 would garner around 52% of console sales in 2023, with 32% for the Nintendo Switch and 15% for the Xbox Series (S/X). All in all, the Xbox wouldn’t do too badly, with around 21-22 million units sold so far.

Moving on to PlayStation, software sales aren’t doing so well, with the total falling from 70.5 to 68 million games from last year, including those sold for the PS 4 and PS4. On the other hand, the number of subscribers to PlayStation Plus reached 47.4 millionthereby bettering the previous quarter’s data and virtually equaling the entire previous year.

Overall, it can be said that the trend in Europe at the global level is being confirmed, somewhat more restrained, but ultimately positive. In the absence of other news, several of which incidentally come from Sony, including the PlayStation Vita 2 and the future PS5 Slim, no big moves are expected in the sector for the rest of the year.
