Netflix lost 2.5 million subscribers in Spain, according to another source

If a few days ago we published the news that Netflix lost a million users in Spain, a drop caused by its new policy of blocking shared accounts, here is another estimate from another specialized source that raises this number to 2.5 million, NO LESS. And strictly categorically.

What does it mean? While Kantar, the author of the first report, spoke of a million users, Barlovento Comunicación, responsible for the second, points out that it qualifies as a disaster 2.5 million less subscribers for Netflix in Spain. In other words, it would no longer be a case of a general decrease in users, as the first report indicated, but of subscribers, of people who unsubscribed and stopped paying.

Of course, in both cases these are estimates from surveys, the results of which should be taken as indicative, not in absolute values. And there is no better example of this than the differences between the data that Kantar published and what Barlovento Comunicación is doing now. Only Netflix knows how much it costs to punish what it recently promoted.

It seems clear that account bans will not be released for free for Netflix, as has been reported for months. It’s something they would no doubt have already planned for in the company, although they may have expected to see it through with more success. Be that as it may, it has only just begunand there are many users who continue to share accounts in Spain without being blocked.

Early problems with SkyShowtime

However, the report now published by Barlovento Comunicación is not limited to the loss of Netflix users: “BARƓMETRO TV-OTT is a permanent and quarterly TRACKING study to deepen the knowledge of the Pay TV and OTT market in Spain, as well as the most prominent trends of VOD/STREAMING platforms “, they explain in their official note.

Other figures in this report therefore include the penetration of video-on-demand platforms in Spanish territory, which would have already reached 81.2% of the population, or 30.3 million Spaniards. The number one service, yes, would continue to be Netflix, accessed by 52.6% of users. The question that arises from this data is, of course, for how long. Because?

Because the service that is growing the most among the population It’s not Netflix anymore, it’s Amazon Prime Video, which with 49.3% of the total number is only 3.3 points from the reference. And if we take into account the difference in price between one and the other, but also the difference in conditions (4K content can only be watched by users of the most expensive Netflix plan for 18 euros per month) and the general decline in the quality of Netflix’s original productions…

The news in the panorama was marked by the outage of SkyShowtime, the service we talked about yesterday, which managed to attract more than 1.8 million users in the first two months in Spain. Although in whole numbers, it is Disney+ peakwith 28% of total users liking her content and the third largest in contention.

In terms of market or screen share, the three platforms leading the table are Netflix (27%), Amazon Prime Video (17.9%) and Movistar (12.3%).
