A girl in Denmark found around 300 Viking Age coins in a cornfield using a metal detector. This was reported by The Guardian.
Silver coins dating back a thousand years were found in the fall of 2022, eight kilometers from the circular stronghold of the Vikings Furkat. According to experts, they date back to 980. The hoard consists of Danish, Arabic and German coins, as well as jewelery of Scottish and Irish origin.
The works will be exhibited at the historical museum in the city of Aalborg in July. The girl who makes the find will receive a cash prize, the amount of which has not yet been announced. “Treasures like this are very rare”, – says curator Christian Norbach. He added that the coins and jewelry found will allow for a deeper study of Viking history.
Archaeologists will continue digging the cornfield in the fall of 2023 after harvest. They hope to find the burial places and homes of the owners of the treasures. It has been recorded that the Vikings believed that by burying treasures they could find them after death.
