The United States will lift mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations for foreign travelers arriving by plane on May 11, a measure effective from 2021, the White House announced on Monday.
On the same day, the health emergency imposed in 2020 by then-President Donald Trump (2017-2021) against the coronavirus pandemic will be ended, as established by law approved by Congress and ratified by President Joe Biden.
“Today, we are announcing that the administration will be waiving Covid-19 vaccination requirements for federal employees, government contractors, and international air passengers May 11on the same day that the public health emergency ends,” the executive said in a statement.
As of 2021, the United States requires proof of vaccination for foreign travelers “to stop the spread of new variants entering the country.”
The White House justified the removal of this requirement by saying that since January 2021, deaths from Covid-19 in the United States have decreased by 95 percent, and the number of hospitalizations by 91 percent.
In addition, the global death rate from the coronavirus is “at its lowest level since the start of the pandemic.”
The executive recalled that nearly 270 million Americans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, allowing the country to enter “another phase.”
“Our COVID-19 vaccination requirements have contributed to immunization across the country, and the vaccination campaign has saved millions of lives,” the White House said.
The United States is the country with the highest number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than a million deaths.
69% of the US population, 230 million people, have completed the coronavirus vaccination schedule. EFE
